Forza Motorsport 4 Demo – First Impressions
The Forza Motorosport 4 demo is now available to download and already tens of thousands of gamers have been experiencing the fruit of the last two years for Turn 10. But what does it show for the game itself, which is released in just a week depending on your location?
Forza Motorsport 4 Single Player:
The first piece of good news is that Forza Motorsport 4 looks gorgeous. It’s not the kind of leap you’d get from a new hardware launch (The rumours of Forza Motorsport 5 as a launch game for the Xbox 720 are gaining momentum), but it’s definitely a sign that the Xbox 360 is being stretched as far as possible in the quest for amazing scenery and better lighting effects. Paintwork gleams like never before, and although you won’t get changing weather in the game, the lighting conditions do make up for it somewhat.
Engine noises sound great, although the demo soundtrack has a particularly irritating electronic soundtrack which may have been inspired by mid 90′s ringtones.
The single player races feature a choice of cars, with the 1970s Mercury Cougar representing the American muscle cars, the 2010 Subaru Impreza WRX STI for Japanese 4-wheel drive fans, and the 2010 Ferrari 458 Italia for Supercar lovers. And there’s a packed field to race against. For instance, in the muscle car selection, you’ll be up against:
- 1971 Ford Mustang
- 1970 Chevrolet Camaro
- Hurst Olds 442
- 1969 Dodge Charger
- 1973 Pontiac Trans Am
- 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle
- AMC Javelin
- 1969 Pontiac Trans Am
- 1968 Shelby GT500
- Ford XB Falcon
- 1969 Chevrolet Camaro SS
If you choose the Subaru, you’ll race against:
- Mazda FD3S RX7
- 2005 Acura NSX
- Mitsubishi Evo X
- 2010 Mugen Civic
- Infiniti G37
- Honda S2000
- 2003 Nissan 350Z
- 2010 Mazda 3
- Hyundai Genesis Coupe
- Mazda RX8
- 2006 Mitsubishi Eclipse
And supercar fans face:
- McLaren MP4-12C
- 2010 Nissan GTR
- 2008 Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR
- Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 (C6)
- Audi R8 5.2
- Lamborghini Gallardo
- Mercedes Benz SLS AMG
- Ford GT
- Alfa Romeo 8C
- Mercedes Benz AMG SL65
- Aston Martin DBS
So most importantly – what is the handling like? In addition to the traditional driver aids of Traction Control, Stability Management, and ABS Brakes, you can also now choose between Normal and Simulation driving modes, with Normal helping to keep things under control a little more.
Having spent some time with the demo, the choice of the Bernese Alps track definitely lent itself more to the Normal driving option, as the bumpy rollercoaster nature of the fictional circuit is enough to unsettle the supercars in particular. As always, the best experience is to turn off as many of the driver aids as possible (We’ll maybe just about allow ABS if you really need it), and going for it.
And it’s a pretty familiar Forza experience in general, with perhaps a slightly easier handling model for Normal, and a slightly trickier one for Simulation when compared to FM3. We’re really looking forward to trying Sim handling on a flatter race circuit to see what it’s really like…
And completing the good news – load times in the demo at least are significantly quicker than the eternity between races in Forza Motorsport 3!
Forza Motorsport 4 Demo: Rivals Mode:
Now this is where it gets interesting, given that Career, Community and AutoVista aren’t selectable. The Rivals mode sees you select from a range of challenges (three in the demo), and taking a nod from Need for Speed’s Autolog, it automatically selects your nearest friend as an automatically selected rival.
Driving the Pagani Zonda you’re given a straight time trial challenge versus the ghost of your rival, or anyone else manually selected from the global leaderboards. But the BMW M5 and Ferrari 458 options both see you competing with an additional challenge in the form of an endless supply of slow traffic. Suddenly the Bernese Alps resembles the M25 in rush hour as you frantically try to find a way through in your M5 before the ghost of your rival disappears into the distance – and to add insult to injury, any clean lap automatically ranks higher than anything involving contact or going off-course (including four wheels across the yellow track boundary lines).
And it’s addictive. We’ve already seen the effect of Autolog in Need for Speed Hot Pursuit and Shift 2: Unleashed, but Forza’s implementation rivals it nicely, and without some of the additional faffing around that the EA games require to locate your nearest rivals. Even downloading the rival ghost doesn’t take that long, although that may change if it’s a lap of the Nurburgring coming up!
Has the demo worked?
If the purpose of the demo was to get everyone we know excited, get the top Forza players competing to head the leaderboards straight away, and made sure that our pre-order has been checked, double-checked and triple-checked, then yes.
We still have a few concerns about various elements of FM4. Namely, have they dumbed it down too much, why are we still lacking great European tracks, and how many additional car parks do we really need once unofficial tournaments and leagues are under way. Plus the idea of yet another ‘complete every single race in first’ achievement already fills us with depression. But the cars look amazing, the handling is certainly on par with previous Forza games, and some additional cars and tracks all add up to enough to convince us it’s worth the asking price.
So what do you think?
Do you agree? And how are your times coming along in rival mode? We’re slowly getting the hang of clean laps through traffic, rather than chuckling as we punt yet another hatchback out of the way as if the BMW M5 is an ice-breaking ship rather than a high-powered saloon. Currently Dan’s generally in the top couple of thousand, Don’s a lot higher, and at least one or two friends of the site are in double figures in the rankings… Let’s see how much we can improve before the weekend!
Need for Speed: The Run – Limited Edition extras
Need for Speed: The Run is due for release on November 18th, 2011 in the UK, and details have now been released for what you get for your money if you plump for the Limited Edition version of the game. Whichever version you choose, you’ll still be racing across America, but the additional cars you’ll get might make it a little easier, and more fun.
Need for Speed: The Run Limited Edition Cars:
The three additional cars you’ll get access to with the Limited Edition of Need for Speed: The Run are the Laborghini Aventador, the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and the new Porsche 911 Carrera S.
The 2012 Porsche Carrera S hasn’t been officially revealed yet, although some spy shots have appeared indicating a longer wheelbase for an easier handling experience, and should also have a bit of weight reduction by aluminium body panels.
We do now that the Laborghini Aventador packs a whopping 700 horsepower, and the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is the fastest and most technically advanced Camaro ever built.
In addition, the Limited Edition also includes five exclusive challenges which will earn bonsu rewards and achievements.
Currently only Game is listing the Limited Edition to pre-order for the UK. However, Play.com is also offering a pre-order bonus with the UnderGround Challenge series, which puts you in three events in a Nissan 370Z, which then unlock the Nissan Skyline GT-R R34.
Shift 2 Unleashed – Speedhunters DLC Video
Shift 2 Unleashed Speedhunters DLC now available
The first Downloadable Content for Shift 2 Unleashed, the Speedhunters pack, is now available on Xbox Live Marketplace for 800 points, and will be coming to the Playstation Network shortly after the recent problems Sony has been experiencing.
The Speedhunters pack features two new career modes, with Drag and Standing Mile options. Both require manual gears to play, and have nine new events which will see traction control disabled, and a new rev counter and gear indicator on the HUD. The Drag mode rewards the fastest time over a traditional quarter mile stretch, whilst Standing Mile simply goes on the fastest speed acheived, with new tuning options allowing 1000 horsepower engines and speeds over 250mph.
One of the two new rivals in the Speedhunter pack will be Chris Rado, who competes in time attack and drag events, and you’ll be able to win his World Racing Pro-FWD Reaper Scion tC.
The events will take place on six tracks in three new locations – one of which is brand new to the game. They’re the new Agueda track in Portugal, a drag and standing mile version of the Japanese Miyatomi circuit, and similar options at the Nevada Freight Depot.
And in addition to the new modes and locations, you also get some new cars – 12 in fact:
- Dodge Challenger RT Speedhunters Edition
- Lexus LFA Speedhunters Edition
- Mazda RX-7 (FC3S) Speedhunters Edition
- McLaren MP4-12C Speedhunters Edition
- Pagani Huarya Speedhunters Edition
- Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evolutions 2 Speedhunters Edition
- Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Speedhunters Edition
- Mitsubishi Lancer EVOUTION IX MR-Edition Speedhunters Edition
- Nissan Fairlady 240ZG (S30) Speedhunters Edition
- Nissan Skyline 2000GT-R (C10) Speedhunters Edition
- Nissan Skyline GT-R (R32) Speedhunters Edition
- Toyota Supra Speedhunters Edition
All the cars have been tuned specifically by Speedhunters. We’re looking forward to seeing how the 190E compares with the one we tuned for the IFCA Production championship in Forza for a nice cross-game car comparison (Remember our comparison of the Delorean in GT5 and Forza?)

Shift 2 Unleashed: All tracks and disciplines revealed, just 11 cars left
As Shift 2: Unleashed is almost on store shelves, the final updates are coming out for the disciplines, tracks and cars which will feature in the game, alongside news of rewards for owners of some of the previous Need for Speed games.
Endurance racing and FIA GT3 complete the disciplines:
One of the final two discplines to be announced is the Endurance Races discpline, for those who love longer challenges. The rival in this class is Tommy Milner, who is an ALMS driver for Corvette Racing. But in Shift 2, he’ll be in the BMW M3 GT ALMS, which will be your prize if you beat him. Milner previously drove the GT2, and the car will be familiar as a cover star of Need for Speed Shift, feating a 4-litre V8 engine.
The other discipline is FIA GT3, which will feature Patrick Soderlund and the prize of the Team Need for Speed BMW Z3 GT3. Soderlund drives the real world Team Need for Speed’s Z4 GT3 in the FIA GT3 European Championship series, alongside Edward Sandstrom.
Final three tracks: Nevada Freight Depot, Suzuka and Willow Springs:
The Californian Willow Springs Raceway has been around for more than 50 years, and appeared in Need for Speed Shift. The main track features 9 turns, a 160mph+ front straight and unusually the layout hasn’t changed since it was built in 1953.
The famous Suzuka Circuit is slightly younger in terms of age and makes its first appearance in the Shift series. The Japanese track is owned by Honda, and host events including the Japanese Formula One GP. The standout fact is that it’s laid out in a figure 8, with the back straight passing over a bridge over the front section. It’s one of the oldest tracks in the F1 calendar, and also hosts the Suzuka 8 Hours motorcycle race.
Finally the fictional Nevada Freight Depot is an open drift stage in an industrial setting.
Porsche and Lancia added: 11 cars left to go:
There are still a few empty spots left on the car list for Shift 2: Unleashed, but nine more vehicles have been accounced:

Need for Speed Shift 2:Unleashed Official Car List
The Shift 2:Unleashed official car list is being unveiled gradually as the game nears the release date of March 29,2011, much like the Shift 2:Unleashed track list. We already know there will be 37 manufacturers represented, which is a pretty healthy number, although we also know that some of these may well be single car appearances – since the developers, Slightly Mad Studios, have stressed their desire to get away from the huge car lists found in Forza and Gran Turismo.
As the list is in alphabetical order, TBA represents cars which have not yet been announced – any guesses on what they might be?

Limited Edition Shift 2: Unleashed for Pre-Order
Shift 2: Unleashed is due to launch in Spring 2011 for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, and Electronic Arts has announced that gamers who pre-order a copy now will receive the Shift 2: Unleashed Limited Edition, with three exclusive cars; the Nissan Silvia Spec R Aero S15, the Alfa Romeo Giulietta QV, and the Lamborghini Murcielago LP640.
That seems to be about it for the Limited Edition bonuses, but Shift 2 is potentially a racing sim worth ordering. It’s the sequel to Need for Speed: Shift, and marks a split in the Need for Speed series, with Criterion handling the arcade side with Hot Pursuit. This means Slightly Mad games can focus on the simulator side of racing, and the aim is for Shift 2 to challenge the likes of Forza Motorsport and Gran Turismo.
There’s certainly a different focus from the car catalogue approach, with handling, a helmet cam, and night racing all being demoed as focal points of the game. And here’s the official trailer for Shift 2.
So if you’re a fan of the first game, or tempted by the second, it’s time to check out the pre-order deals, although so far it appears only Amazon is currently listing the Limited Edition for pre-order.
The Cars of Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit
Need for Speed: Shift 2 Unleashed – details and previews
With a release date set for Spring 2011 on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, more details have been emerging for Need for Speed: Shift 2, including some brief hands-on time for some sites, and an interview with lead designer Andy Tudor featured on Eurogamer.
Given that NfS: Shift 2 is explicitly being pitched as a rival to Forza Motorsport 3 and Gran Turismo 5, it’s interesting to look at all the information and see whether it might stack up.
One key fact is that it won’t attempt to include every car in the world – Tudor refers to research showing most people collect 10-15 cars in game – their first career car, one or two for each vehicle level, the car they own in real life, and a handful of dream cars.
So the focus for the game has been on the handling and experience side, with a new elite handling model and more control over all the controller settings (sensitivity, deadzones, steering aids etc). The release of Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit has meant that developers Slightly Mad Studios have been able to focus on the simulator side of racing, and streamline in-game currency and ratings for example. Two further areas for improvement are the social racing side, including an improved Autolog facility as seen in Hot Pursuit, and improving the in-game rivals.
Previews summary:
Looking at all the sites which were able to get hands-on experience of the game, it appears that the ‘helmet cam’ stands out. Rather than a view from a fixed point, it aims to simulate the effect of a cam actually mounted in your crash helmet, reacting to bumps and undulations on the track, and moving to look at the apex of corners.
Graphically it appears that Shift 2 will be an improvement over the previous game, with the new rendering engine impressing quite a few people, and the implementation of night racing becoming a key feature.
The night racing takes a different approach to most games, with a more realistic approach. Rather than including floodlights and chevrons to keeps things easy, the night racing in Shift: 2 Unleashed relies on your track knowledge and your headlights – and if you crash and lose your headlights you’ll be in real trouble!
There hasn’t been much information forthcoming about the handling model, but it appears to err on the ‘twitchy’ side as it did in Need for Speed: Shift. and along with the social side of Autolog, the driver battles, and the battle to control your car, will be the chief challenges in the game.
Will Shift 2 challenge GT5 and FM3?
Shift 2: Unleashed is certainly shaping up to be an interesting addition to the sim racing category, and it’s likely to be a viable alternative – especially for those who don’t enjoy the collection side of owning every car and completing every track in GT5 and FM3.
The first game was certainly a very fun and enjoyable racer, and it’s being timed quite well, as certainly FM3 fans won’t complain about a new racer to try. The good reception for Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit will also have helped revitalise interest in the series, and the doubts over the future of Project Gotham Racing will see a potentially slimmer field. If we assume ORD readers will definitely own either GT5 (PS3 owners) or Forza (Xbox 360 owners), and exclude F1 2010 as focused on a single race category, the Shift 2 is likely to be the big 2nd race game. The only potential fly in the ointment might be the Codemaster sequel to Racedriver: GRID, depending on the release date.
