If you’re not familiar with the upcoming Road Trip game module, you might be surprised to see the 1967 Ford Mustang previewed for American Truck Simulator. But you’ll soon be able to drive the highways of the United States in cars and pickups alongside the trucks you’re already familiar with.
Two DLC packs have been revealed so far, with the Mustang part of a Ford Car Pack, which also includes the 2023 Ford F-150, 2023 Ford Bronco, and the 1998-2012 Ford Crown Victoria. The alternative is the RAM and Dodge Car Pack with the 2025 RAM 1500 Pickup Truck, 1970 Dodge Charger, 1996 Dodge Viper and the 2023 Dodge Challenger.
The second generation Mustang GT Fastback was made famous with Steve McQueen driving a modified 1968 2+2 model through San Francisco in the film Bullitt, which you’ll be able to recreate if a friend owns the Dodge car pack. And a 1967 Shelby GT500 Ford Mustang Fastback appeared as Eleanor in the 2000 remake of Gone in 60 Seconds (the original film featured a 1971 Mustang SportsRoof).
It’s still a work in progress, with a reasonable engine noise but some extremely loud indicator sounds. And the interior looks nice, especially as a place to relax after a long day hauling cargo.
It’ll be interesting to experience the Road Trip module and DLC when they’re released. The idea of driving something besides trucks has been requested by American Truck Simulator and Euro Truck Simulator 2 players for a long time, and has been previously available via various unofficial mods. And there’s nothing else which has such an expansive road network to explore (if you’ve bought the various DLC map expansions).
On the other hand, it’ll depend a lot on the gameplay and car handling. There are plenty of open world titles to choose from, whether it’s Forza Horizon, BeamNG or the original Assetto Corsa with mod content. I’m intrigued to try it, and it might encourage me to finally map my wheel and pedals for the truck sims, rather than just dabbling using a controller.
