It’s a way off being available, but this battle royale obstacle racer Vroom! preview video looks pretty interesting. Developed by Adam Bernath of iGaming Studio, it blends the popular format of Fall Guys in trying to get to the end of a course, with the toy vehicles of Micro Machines or Hot Wheels. And it also looks pretty great, too.
Part of the reason is that Adam has chosen to concentrate on a release for the PC, PS5 and the Xbox Seres X|S, and can capitalise on the early access tools in Unreal Engine 5 to achieve the impressive visuals.
It’s a great idea, considering point-to-point racing is fairly common in motorsport. And switching that to an obstacle race with some fun and interesting environments seems like the perfect way to open it up to people who might be turned off by racing games – but have a passing knowledge of Fall Guys and similar titles.
Apparently the video is the result of the first two months of work, with plans for alpha and beta testing weekends and building out a small team to release the game late in 2022. And best of all is the news that the online racing will include potentially 60+ players in either solo or squad modes. So it should be fun and chaotic in equal measure.
The lighting and textures on the wooden floor is particular impressive, and even includes detailed scratches and marks which add to the immersion in what appears to be a child’s bedroom for the trailer. And interacting with the environment, with falling wooden blocks to hinder opponents, looks like a good chance to be vindictive. Which is an important part of any supposedly ‘fun’ car title!
And it definitely fits the title better than the 1991 game from Lankhor for the Amiga, which was adapted to become F1 on the Megadrive.
It’s also great to see yet another interesting car game coming from an indie developer, especially with plans for console releases already. So you’ll be able to see more on the latest Vroom! news, updates and release, here.
