There could be a new choice for fans of drifting games as Torque Drift 2 gets an official Formula DRIFT license. The sequel from Grease Monkey Games will get a worldwide premier during the live broadcast of Formula DRIFT round 2 on May 7th, 2022. The original game was released for Android and iOS in 2020, and on Steam for the PC in April 2021.
No details about the game have been released, although the original offered more than 15 tracks, tournaments for up to 32 players and open lobbies for a maximum of 10 drivers, leaderboards, and licensed teams, parts and sponsors. So expect something fairly similar, and the screenshots of an empty circuit released so far clearly feature Long Beach. Apparently it’ll have both North American and Japanese FD circuits, and the ‘most in-depth virtual Formula DRIFT experience to date’

What has been described is the fact parent company Animoca Brands will be ‘extending into the metaverse’ as Torque DIRFT 2 will offer “collectible and utility NFTs and engaging virtual experiences that will be integrated into Anomoca Brands’ REVV Motorsport ecosystem”. So you’ll be able to own, trade and earn official Formula DRIFT NFTs, if that’s you’re thing.
Ryan Sage, president of Formula DRIFT, said: “Formula DRIFT has always been an innovator and we constantly strive to integrate new technology. From the creation of our free-to-view livestream, to drone footage of every qualifying and competition run, to our multimedia social media platforms, and more, Formula DRIFT has set the standard for international motorsports series. That’s why we’re really excited to partner with Animoca Brands on Torque Drift 2 for both the gaming side and the new NFT aspect, which opens up some really interesting opportunities for the sport and fans alike.”
Arran Potter, the founder and managing director of Grease Monkey Games, commented: “We’re excited to bring Formula DRIFT into the open metaverse and continue to deliver the ultimate Formula DRIFT game experience to our users. With Torque Drift 2 being the official and only blockchain game of Formula DRIFT, players can expect a comprehensive and immersive Formula DRIFT experience that has never been seen before.
Other blockchain titles from Animoca Brands include REVV Racing, MotoGP Ignition and Formula E: High Voltage. Animoca also recently acquired Eden Games, former developers of the V-Rally, Test Drive Unlimited and Gear.Club titles, (the upcoming Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown is being rebooted by KT Racing and published by Nacon after they acquired the IP).
We’re trying to keep an open mind about the integration of NFTs and blockchain technology in racing games, but it’s always a concern when you see them described as ‘utility NFTs’, suggesting that paying real money for virtual ownership will offer in-game advantages. Either way, you’ll be able to keep up with the latest Torque Drift 2 news, updates and more, here.
