It feels like the 1970s might have returned as Atari announce single screen isometric racer NeoSprint as a modern return to the format used by the Sprint series from 1976 until 1989. Having already been available in early access for the modern Atari VCS, it’ll now launch for PC and consoles in Summer 2024.
If you remember the original Sprint 2 (which was followed by Sprint 1, 4, and 8, as the numbers were for the number of players rather than the release order), or Super Sprint and Championship Sprint in the 1980s, then it’ll bring back memories of arcades and home computer conversions (along with many games ‘inspired’ by the format.
Racing games have obviously changed a fair bit over the last 30-40 years, so developers Headless Chicken Games have added features including upgradable cars, a track builder and global leaderboards alongside the contemporary graphics.
There’s a campaign mode which will feature multiple cups and different tracks to let you unlock new liveries and decorations if you’re successful, along with time trails and obstacle course modes, plus multiplayer for up to eight people.
NeoSprint also features eight different types of car with differences in speed, acceleration and handling, with each model customisable via colours and decals to help you keep track of yourself in close competition.
Lots of isometric racers have been released since the last Sprint game appeared, and recent years have seen a number of great titles. But there’s something to be said for nostalgia if NeoSprint can remind older gamers of their childhood, but also provide an enjoyable experience for anyone more used to modern racing titles.
NeoSprint is currently available exclusively as an early access title for the Atari VCS console. It’ll be coming this summer to the PC via Steam, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S through the Microsoft Store, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 via the PlayStation Store, and Nintendo Switch via the eShop.
