Mercedes Signs Jarno Opmeer for 2021 F1 Esports

There are some big moves in virtual motorsport at the moment as Mercedes signs Jarno Opmeer for 2021 F1 Esports and Formula E competition, with the Dutch reigning champion moving from the Alfra Romeo team.

The 21-year-old began racing in karting and single seater racing, progressing as far as the Renault Sport Academy before switching to the eSports world with Renault-Vitality in 2019. He took one win and fourth in the championship before moving to the Alfa Reomeo Orlen Esports Team for 2020, taking the championship with four wins and eight podiums in total.

The Mercedes AMG F1 Esports team have also signed Dani Moreno from McLaren Shadow to drive alongside Bono Huis who joined in 2020. The changes follow the departure of two-time former champion Brendon Leigh, who has moved to the Ferrari Driver Academy Esports Team for this season.

The Formula E Accelerate series begins tonight, January 28th, 2021, with 25 minute races starting from 7pm UTC and available to watch on the official Formula E channels on Youtube, Twitch and Facebook. The series runs until a Gradn Final on the 25th March.

Meanwhile the Virtual Grand Prix series also beings this weekend with one F1 Esports driver taking place in a five-lap sprint qualifying race, followed by the feature race which will include Williams drivers George Russell and Nicholas Latifi for the opening Austrian Grand Prix, along with Alex Albon, Pietro Fittipaldi, Stoffel Vandoorne (also driving for Mercedes), Tonion Liuzzi, professional footballer and virtual F1 regular Thibaut Courtois, and KTM Motocross rider and MXGP world champion Jeffrey Herlings, which you can start watching from 6pm GMT on Sunday January 31st.
